“I am starting my BA textiles at CSM. Last year I moved to the UK from Malawi and unknowingly all my projects reflected the elements of what I was missing or how I felt about being away from home. I recently completed my foundation at CSM; Fashion and textiles and my final project was called natures battle. I called that because I wanted to show the growth and destruction that takes place in cities; as I learn more about my topic I realized it was more to do with the relationship I had with nature. In Malawi I was constantly surrounded by nature, when I moved I found myself in a “concrete city” which made me feel suffocated. However the term concrete city is untrue as I also learned that London is filled with nature it’s just in specific places like parks, kew gardens etc. which makes it unavailable, inaccessible and out of people’s Way, and this unavailability of nature has a negative impact on peoples well-being. And this garment (first image) portrays that feeling of change, suffocation, isolation and decay.”
